STEM Education for Inner-City Kids

The United States has a huge shortage of workers trained in highly technical fields, so much so that we import these workers from other countries. At the same time, many urban areas have a high unemployment rate, in part because many kids growing up in those areas don't pursue science, technical, engineering, or math (STEM) education during the crucial years of junior high and high school. How do we entice and encourage more young people to take these challenging classes?
