Can Online Misogyny Become Teachable Moments?

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Online discussions sometimes get derailed when a woman gives a contrary opinion, and the responses attack her for her looks, for her alleged sexual behavior, for not being qualified to give an opinion because she is a woman, or even stoop to outright threats of rape or death. Misogynist speech like this can reduce the impact of women's opinions by diverting attention away from the issues they raise, devastate the person under attack, and decrease diversity by driving women away from the discussion forum. Can acts of misogynist speech be teachable moments? The panelists discuss online responses such as "counter-speech," how to support the target, and ways to build tolerant communities.
